This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project to make the world's books discoverable online.

It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.

Marks, notations and other marginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the publisher to a library and finally to you.

Usage guidelines

Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing this resource, we have taken steps to prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying.

We also ask that you:

+ Make non-commercial use of the files We designed Google Book Search for use by individuals, and we request that you use these files for personal, non-commercial purposes.

+ Refrain from automated querying Do not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system: If you are conducting research on machine translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a large amount of text is helpful, please contact us. We encourage the use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help.

+ Maintain attribution The Google "watermark" you see on each file is essential for informing people about this project and helping them find additional materials through Google Book Search. Please do not remove it.

+ Keep it legal Whatever your use, remember that you are responsible for ensuring that what you are doing is legal. Do not assume that just because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other countries. Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can't offer guidance on whether any specific use of any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner anywhere in the world. Copyright infringement liability can be quite severe.

INTRODUCTION

The New-England Historic Genealogical Society was granted a charter by the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachu- setts, March 18, 1845, "for the purpose of collecting, preserving, and occasionally publishing, genealogical and historical matter, relating to early New England families, and for the establishment and main- tenance of a cabinet."

Within a year from its incorporation the Society leased a room from the City of Boston in a building recently erected near the City Hall at the comer of City Hall Avenue ana Williams Court, and now occupied as a police station. This room was at the rear of the third floor, had three windows looking out into the Court, and was twenty-two feet long by seventeen feet wide. In this room on January 15, 1846, were deposited the books, pamphlets and manuscripts which formed the nucleus of the Society's Library and which up to that time had been in the possession of the several directors. A single book-case was sufficient to hold the entire library and, had the Society then possessed one copy of each Ameri- can publication devoted wholly to genealogy, a single shelf would have been ample for that division of its library. Up to this date there had been but little interest manifested in genealogy in America, and the occasional visitor in quest of data relating to American families foimd no indexes, demanded none, and needed none, for a few hours sufficed to examine page by page all the printed work on the subject.

During the year 1845 various suggestions for publications were considered by the Society and by special committees appointed for the purpose, and on January 17, 1846, two days after the actual founding of the Library, action was taken by the Society which resulted in the establishment of The New-England Historical and Genealogical Register. The first number was issued on February 6,

vi INTRODUCTION

1847 and, with but little change in its plan or scope, the Register has continued to appear quarterly ever since. The first volume contained 400 pages a very modest annual imdertaking when the magnitude of the Society's work is considered, but less so when compared with the entire printed genealogical output of the pre- ceding two and a quarter centuries in New England. During this period the chief genealogical books were Farmer's Register (352 pages), Mitchell's Bridgewater (400 pages), Deane's Scituate (412 pages), Thayer's Memorial (280 pages), Dodd's East-Haven Register (200 pages),. Kilboum (Genealogy (151 pages). Sharpies (Genealogy (136 pages), Shattuck's C!oncord (400 pages), Felt's Ipswich (320 pages). Coffin's Newbury (416 pages), and the Goddard genealogy (96 pages).

The first volume of the Register was supplied with a partial index of persons, containing the names of "about all the individ- uals concerning whom particular mention" was made in the volume, but excepting those embraced in several long lists and "Family Genealogies." It was then deemed needless and inexpedient to insert in the index the names from these lists though they amounted to thousands. This index, filling ten pages of three columns each, nonpareil type, probably contained less than half the names printed in the volume, and yet it was far superior to any index that had previously appeared in the same field. In the second volume there was both improvement and retrogression: improvement in the matter of the index being complete as far as surnames were con- cerned, but retrogression due to the omission of the Christian names. The index was thus reduced from one of persons to one of surnames. From the second to the forty-second volumes inclusive the indexes supplied were but bare lists of surnames averaging less than ten pages of four columns, nonpareil type.

In the two decades following the establishment of the Library and the Register, interest in genealogy, awakened by these two potent forces, developed so rapidly, and genealogical publica- tions became so numerous, that there was a general demand for better indexes to facilitate research. Responding to this de- mand, the late William Henry Whitmore prepared for publication

a *' General Index of Names for the First Tweaty Volumes of the Register/' This, it was estimated, would make a book of about 200 octavo pages. A prospectus for it was issued, calling for 250 subscribers at $3.00 each, signed by W. H. Whit more, Edmund F. Slafter, William B. Towne, William B. Trask, John Ward Dean, Jeremiah Colbum and C. W. Tuttle. Arrangements were made with Messrs. Wiggin and Lunt of Boston to publish the work, but the subscriptions received did not warrant the publication.

Before two more decades had passed it became evident that better indexes in the annual volimaes of the Register were essential. The Publishing Committee for 1889, consisting of Messrs, Albert H. [ojrt, Francis H, Brown, Henry H, Edes, John T, Hassam and Frank E. Bradish, devised the system of indexing used in the forty*third and all succeeding volumes. The new indexes, which were intended to reduce the student's labor to a minimum, proved in eveiT way satisfactory and still further emphasized the need of a aimilar consolidated index for all of the preceding volumes.

On February 6, 188^ Mr. John T. Hassam, at a meeting of the

kXHrectors of the Society, "spoke of the importance of a full index la the whole series of volumes of the Register," and plans by which it eoiild be accomplished were discussed. Thirteen yeans later, February 3, 1896, Mr. Hassam brought up the matter of an index at m meeting of the Society's Council and it was "Voted that a committee of three be appointed by the Chair to consider the sub- ject of a consolidated index to all the volumes of the New-England Historical and Genealogical Register/' The chair appointed John ^T* Haasam, Julius H. Tuttle and John Ward Dean. Mr. Tuttle Vdeclined to serve and Mr, George Kuho Clarke was appointed March I 30. 1896 to fill the vacancy,

On May 4, 1896 this Committee was authorized by the Council

H^to make such contracts and agreements in relation to said index,

Hiiitber for the whole or any part of the same, with such persona or

F^orporations and on such terms, as may seem to them expedient:

all paymenta to be made only from such moneys as shall have been

subscribed and paid in to the Treasurer of this Society for said pur-

exceeding the amount so paid to the Treasurer." The Committee estimated the cost of preparation of the proposed index, exclusive of printing, to be about $3000. They issued an appeal for funds and received from the following donors a total of $2420.92, in sums varying from $1 to $200:

For about five years, work was in progress under contracts with the Committee. In November, 1901, having expended the amount donated for the purpose, the Committee asked the Council of the Society to advance money for the prosecution of the work. A total of $6500 was advanced while Mr. Hassam was chairman of the Committee and was expended under his direction imtil his death, April 22, 1903, in the compilation and verification of the Index.

Mr. Dean died January 22, 1902, and Mr. William Prescott Greenlaw was appointed in his place on the Committee June 4, 1902. Mr. William Taggard Piper was appointed to take Mr. Has- sam's place on the Committee May 6, 1903. He resigned October 7y 1903, and Mr. James Swift Rogers was appointed chairman of the Committee. May 4, 1904 Mr. Nathaniel Cushing Nash was chosen to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. Greorge Kuhn Clarke, November 4, 1903. After the death of Mr. Rogers, Mr. Francis Apthorp Foster was appointed chairman, May 3, 1905.

Following Mr. Hassam's death, the work of verification was continued and finished on the plan adopted by him. In the sununei of 1904 the Committee, with Mr. Rogers as chairman, issued a prospectus which practically offered to publish the Index at coet ij 200 subscribers were secured. This number being assured, th< work of printing began in 1905 under contract with the F. H. Gilsoi Company of Boston.

The Committee believe that they have secured the lowest cos for printing and editing consistent with good work, and they Havi endeavored to finish the task begun by their predecessors in a raaxi ner creditable to the Society and satisfactory to the subscriben It is their intention to complete the publication without proBt o

to the Society and equitably to all subscribers. They are en- deavoring to dispose of the remaining unsold sets of the Index .^hile the work is in progress. Owners of nearly complete sets of I the Register will find it to their advantage to secure the Index before it is out of print. Five of the rarest volumes of the Reg- ister can scarcely be bought to-day for double the price of the Index, yet a nearly coniplete set of the Register with the Index, After this is out of print, will probably be worth more, both for use ^kd intrinsically, than a complete set without the Index.

The Committee desire unanimously to record their appreciation

'if the skill, ability and interest shown by Miss Rayne and Miss

Chapman in editing the Index. They were transferred from the

library Staff of the Society to take charge of this work because

f their thorough knowledge of cataloguing and indexing. The

otnmittee feel that the results obtained have more than justified

ia their selection.
